As a young man Vito Lauria decided to revive the family wine business that his grandfather had started in 1958. The family vineyards had been abandoned for more than a decade when Vito graduated from oenological studies in Friuli in 2003. After working with several different northern wineries he returned to the island and began restoring the family business, releasing his first wines in 2010.

Lauria’s vineyards in western Sicily near Alcamo are farmed organically and with a focus on sustainability. He works almost exclusively with Sicilian varieties including Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, Zibibio, Perricone and, of course, Grillo. Giardinello, the vineyard where the Grillo is grown, sits at an altitude of 600-700 meters lending freshness to the wine. It is medium bodied with green apple and citrus notes, and a pleasant minerality characteristic of the island. It was delicious with baked cod with green olives, capers, lemon and ginger but is rich enough to pair with chicken or other white meats. (Anders)
