Domaine de Thulon Régnié 2023 - Beaujolais, France

$23      Soul Wine Price $19.55

Annie and René Jambon purchased the historic 15th century Chateau de Thulon in 1987 after working for years as “métayers” in Beaujolais, essentially sharecroppers. While tenant farming in France is quite common it is really only in Beaujolais that the practice of paying for your tenancy in actual agricultural products, grapes being the case here, still occurs. Since becoming their own landlords the Jamons have gone to town: buying more land, converting to sustainable farming practices and modernizing the winery. Along the way they also instilled the passion they carry for the profession into their children, Carine and Laurent, who now share duties in the business, Carine in sales and Laurent the winemaking.

Although they are a small family winery the Jambon’s make a surprising range of wines including Beaujolais-villages Rosé, Nouveau, Rouge and Blanc, Beaujolais cru wines from Chiroubles, Morgon and, of course, Régnié, plus a couple small production, higher end wines, and a tiny amount of Viognier. Their Régnié is a great value for a Cru Beaujolais. It is made in a fresh, energetic style with bright fruit, great texture and bright acidity. This is a very food friendly wine and will be sympatico with just about any dish you put on the table: charcuterie, pizza, roast chicken, mushroom risotto just to name a few. (Anders)
