Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 'Clos de la Marechale' 2023

For the past several years we have been offering the Mugnier Nuits Saint George, Clos de la Marechale 1er Cru in this email. It is the one wine of theirs that we get enough to offer in this space. While it is not inexpensive, it is fairly priced for a single vineyard Premier Cru Burgundy.

The 2023 just arrived in town and based on what we have found, this is another very successful vintage for the Clos de la Maréchale and is definitely the past quality/price ratio in the entire Mugnier lineup, many of which we only get a few bottles of. Burgundy for the people!

This year there is also another wine, the  2023, Nuits-St-Georges Clos des Fourches 1er Cru that we have not seen before. According to Jacques Fredric Mugnier “The local slope and the subtle variations in the nature of the soil, more clayey here, more draining there, could cause notable differences in the development of the grapes, with the deeper soils favouring the swelling of the berries.

This contrast in the character of the grapes between the different sectors of Clos de la Maréchale gave us the opportunity to revive a tradition that we had abandoned since 2008, that of producing a second wine, under the name Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fourches (the former name of Clos de la Maréchale in the 19th century). This cuvée is not as powerful and structured as the Clos de la Maréchale, but shows a good intensity with a suppleness and a floral expression that will make it ideal for earlier drinking.”
