The GR-10 is a great example of the “New Spain” wine revolution: a new generation of winemakers committed to terroir-driven, low intervention wines focused on indigenous grapes, historical farming practices and “re-discovering” forgotten regions. From the prosaically named Vinos de Madrid DO, the GR-10 is primarily old vine Garnacha (up to 100 years) with a touch of Cariñena and Syrah. It has juicy red fruits but is kept lively and energetic with a mineral edge, plenty of spice, fine tannins and great acidity courtesy of its lofty, granite soiled vineyards. (The GR-10 is a hiking path from Lisbon to Valencia that passes by some of the Four Monkey’s high-altitude plots in the Sierra de Gredos.)
